.jpg) On June 12 & 13 a group of passionate community members participated in discussions to generate ideas about reducing fuel consumption while maintaining a high quality of life.
Following is a list of preliminary ideas generated through these meetings. Although posting of these ideas does not constitute endorsement on the part of CQI, we do encourage the public to get involved in the discussion by following the link to "Dear Vivian" on the left side of this page, and posting your thoughts and ideas.
Here's the initial list:
- Improvements to efficiency of low income houses - "Keep the Heat In" initiative
- “Walking school bus”
- Anti-idling bylaw
- Implement cycling master plan
- Reopen transportation masterplan (fix existing moratorium on new roads - no new roads for 5 years)
- Remove mandatory parking bylaw for new businesses
- Moratorium and progressive law on drive-throughs

- Educate public on trails in the city: access points, etc.
- Encourage creation of community gardens
- “Staycations” – vacations close to home
- Buy local foods
- Non-motorized camping
- Car-sharing
- Improve opportunities for local businesses to recycle
- Consume only what is needed; reduce waste
- Use rain barrels
- Compost
- Creation of a federal energy ombudsman
- encourage free-cycling - central drop off points for materials that can be re-used as is, free of charge
- Everything is energy – keep this in mind
- Recycling, free-cycling in manufacturing industry
- “City-wide “free-cycle” days
- Local Cap in trade
We'll be producing a report to City Council in the fall, highlighting some of the best and brightest ideas received, so get involved and be a part of the conversation!
